Diving Deeper:
Brian Stelter is returning to CNN after his abrupt ousting in 2022. Stelter, who served as host of "Reliable Sources," known for his criticism of Donald Trump and conservative media, was dismissed as part of a broader effort by former CNN chief Chris Licht to refocus the network’s journalistic reputation. Licht sought to tamp down what many perceived as an overly partisan shift under his predecessor Jeff Zucker.
Now, two years later, Stelter will take on a different role at the network, returning as CNN’s Chief Media Analyst. He announced his return in a message to "Reliable Sources" newsletter readers, which he founded in 2015. Stelter said he is excited to take on new responsibilities, including leading the newsletter, developing digital content, and appearing on-air. His new role will not, however, include reviving the "Reliable Sources" TV show that was canceled in 2022.
"The media industry has matured, CNN has evolved, and I have changed a lot since I signed off two years ago," Stelter wrote, noting that he has since taken a step back from news to better understand the information ecosystem from a different perspective.
Stelter’s departure from CNN was controversial, as he was one of several high-profile personalities let go as Licht sought to realign the network’s coverage. Stelter was frequently criticized by conservatives for his handling of stories like Russiagate, Hunter Biden's laptop, and his praise for figures like Andrew Cuomo and Michael Avenatti.
