Diving Deeper:
In a Newsweek op-ed, former President Donald Trump laid out his ambitious plan to restore the American economy, focusing heavily on manufacturing. Titled "My Plan to Make America Affordable Again—and Bring Back the American Dream," Trump framed his agenda as a direct counter to what he calls the damaging economic policies of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump criticized Harris for "shutting down power plants across the country" and driving up electricity prices. He claimed these policies, coupled with her support for the "Inflation Creation Act," have shipped manufacturing jobs overseas, particularly to China, costing the U.S. 24,000 manufacturing jobs in August 2024 alone.
The core of Trump’s strategy involves slashing the corporate tax rate to 15% for companies that manufacture in America. “The United States will give you the lowest taxes, the lowest energy costs, the lowest regulatory burdens,” Trump wrote, but noted the benefit would only apply to those companies that hire American workers and make their products domestically.
Trump also pledged to reduce energy prices by half within 12 months, asserting that lower costs would attract industries from around the globe. He argued that energy-intensive sectors like artificial intelligence would see massive growth under his plan.
Taking aim at Harris, Trump accused her of facilitating a decline in U.S. manufacturing by supporting policies that incentivized offshoring. "With her tie-breaking vote...she sent billions to Chinese battery factories, Chinese solar factories, and Chinese electronics factories," Trump claimed.
He closed with a promise to create "millions of blue-collar jobs" and a warning: "If Vice President Harris gets four more years, this time as president, she will de-industrialize the United States and destroy our country."
Trump's plan also includes the appointment of a "Manufacturing Ambassador" to attract businesses back to American soil, and a commitment to remove millions of illegal immigrants to protect American jobs.
According to Trump, this agenda is the key to bringing back the American dream, making America "bigger, better, and stronger than ever before."
